Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
