Administration Announces Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
